Baggage
People often inherit their politics from their parents. In some cases, what politics inherit from people is more interesting. Take Sarath Kumar’s jumping ship to the AIADMK. AIADMK not only gets itself some marketable (leaving aside for a moment the question of why any one would find Sarath Kumar a marketable anything) star power, but also a prime television asset. Will this mean the end of Sun TV’s hegemony over the 9:00 PM slot, and the ascendance of Jaya TV into the hearts and minds of weepy wives and hungry husbands? As election unfolds in TN, it sure looks like life’s going to be interesting.

Radhika stands to lose as a result of this move. Sun has a kingdom spanning the entire South. Radhika’s programs are being dubbed into other South Indian languages also. Jaya doesn’t have as much TRPs as SUN TV and hence Radhika can’t earn much.

That’s an intersting point, Kaps. I’d forgotten about Sun TV’s dubbed avtars. From what happened with Balachander & Naga, I was merely thinking abt the drop in production qualilty when content shifts away from Sun TV. Clearly, there are more signficant disadvantages to cutting ties with Sun.

Doz,
It is not just dubbed, the shows are customized to suit local audiences. Thangavettai in Tamil is anchored by Ramya krishna. The same is anchored by Radhika in telugu and urvasi (?) in Malayalam. Selvi / chithi might be dubbed and screened in other languages.
As far as I know, SUN TV sells the prime time slots to production houses (like Radaan) and the production houses need to go in search of advertisers. This is like auctioning. Any advertisers would be willing to pay more for a spot on SUN TV rather than on Jaya TV. Hence a Prime time slot on SUN is much more profitable than a Prime time slot on any other tamil channel.

Hmm… The question then becomes are viewers loyal to Sun TV or to content creators like Radhika? The experience hasn’t been great for those who left for Raj a few years ago. I suspect that Raj may not attract as much audience, therefore fewer Ad $$$ than Sun, hence the drop in content quality. Radaan may be the biggest chick that’s flown the Sun coop yet. Perhaps unlike Raj, Jaya TV is both able and willing to spend the blunt it will take to give viewers of Selvi the same quality they are used to. It’s a political coup (well, of a sort), but economically, how sustainable will it be for both Jaya & Radaan?

hey DoZ,
Content does matter.. naga and balachander still had a niche audience following them wherever they went.. but naga going solo and doin a comeback on sun, didnt garner much of success, as the content became stale and indira soundarrajan started pennin similar stories for other channels too.. both marmadesam series/balachander’s serials did well initially of the freshness they brought in their wake… people need to innovate to keep things going…
chithi was a grand success cos it gave up the sob sob formula of avm serials and had a fast paced script.. so did annamalai.. but somehow i feel that selvi is riding on the fame of its glorious predecessors… as for other radaan shows, like some annoying comedies and game shows.. there was nothing new or novel in either.. i d find jaya’s veetuku veedu looti anyday more hilarious than chinna paapa periya paapa.. and some shows like chellame chellam by newsreader uma, have some original content which deserve commendation..
Be it jaya, sun, raadan , bala or naga, if people wanna stay afloat in this media, they need to continuously think on their feet, and innovate.. even the housewives have their threshold of tolerance….

Soliloquist: Good points. And you’re definitely more clued in than I am about the new stuff - we only get Sun TV in the US (I believe Vijay is an option for DirecTV subscribers), and my roomie and I decided we could do without the sob stuff. I only know of Selvi from conversations with family and friends (why watch a story abt a man with 2 wives when there is one about a man with 3 wives?). Ah well, that is neither here nor there. It is heartening to know that housewives do have thresholds
I feel that it’s a pity for Radhika to move just because her husband cannot abide by the DMK any more. Perhaps initially, her ties with the party did help Radhika get opportunities at Sun that were not so readily available to others (Sripriya comes to mind). Now, the same ties are causing her to make a less than perfect business decision. As Kaps says, Sun definitely gets her more reach in the other southern states. But if the quality of her shows has indeed been dropping, it’s more Jaya’s loss than Sun’s. Her move should open up at least 3 prime time slots in Sun (week days at 9, the wednesday “mystery/thriller” slot, and the Saturday game show). So long as Ekta Kapoor doesn’t move south-wards, it’s all good.

I guess they probably just got frustrated with the nepotism in DMK. But, it sure will be interesting to see what happens to Radhika’s tv career. I did read (Ju.Vi) that Radhika is poised to head a new TV channel, to be started by a leading magazine establishment. Any guesses, anybody ?

Apart from the impact on TV soaps and which programme goes where, do you realise that the likes of Sarath Kumar (or even Vaiko) realise that there is dynastic rule in the DMK only when they want to ditch the party. Vaiko has even coined a new description for DMK — Dayanidhi Munnetra Kazhagam! At least in the case of Radhika, one would assume, her ties with the DMK would have been more emotional considering her lineage. But, Sarath Kumar had no such baggage.

Mullai: Hmm…I hadn’t heard that. I did hear that Sun is branching into other media - with the FM radio, and a newspaper might also be in the works (if it hasn’t been launched already). And you tell me that a magazine is expanding into television… I am ignorant about the financial clout of the top magazines, so am unable to guess which one can afford the investment needed.
Ramki: The thing I really wonder about is why has it become so difficult for Stalin to inherit the kingdom? Sure, I realize that he is no angel, but that shouldn’t make him stand out all that much in TN politics. Were promises (implied or overt) made to Vaiko and other older members earlier? Why do they feel the need to leave the party in droves now, if they knew all along (or at least for the last 10 years) that Stalin is being groomed for the top job? About Radhika’s emotional ties with the party - yeah, I see your point. The thing that gets me is that she has these solid family and business ties which have worked so well for her, and yet here she is quitting it all because her husband wants to jump ship.

DoZ,
As to Stalin, the less said the better. Despite being “groomed” for several years (or even a few decades), he still hasn’t proved himself. He was the reason Vaiko quit the DMK (or the old man created a situation when Vaiko had no option but to quit the party) in 1992-93. What irks people like Vaiko and, even perhaps Radhika, is the importance being given now to Dayanidhi Maran. Till a few months before the 2004 Parliamentary elections, he was in no way associated with party activities. As the DMK was getting ready to leave the NDA, of which it was a part till then, one could see Dayanidhi Maran getting himself into pictures standing next to Karunanidhi whenever top political leaders (of the Congress I) called on Karunanidhi. And, thanks to his brother owning Sun TV he is on TV every day. This, even for those who have no party affiliation, is a little too much.

It was widely talked that Sarathkumar threatened to divorce Radhika if she does not stand with her. God knows the fact.
