Understanding the vella-kaari

Generations of Tamil men have watched generations of white women come on screen, take their clothes off (or not), have sex, and go away. It must have been a bewildering experience. Why do these women live in the jungle? Why does whatever army they work for give them such big guns but not many clothes? What is that man saying to these women to get them to take off whatever little clothes they have on? [1]

These men need despair no more. Finally, there is comprehension on the other side of the peep hole. Dubbed versions of skin flicks make their debut in TN. I’m not sure how much sense it will make to “understand” the sequel to a 14 year old movie, if you didn’t watch the first one.[2] But, at least now connoisseurs of A padams are closer to understanding those vella-kaaris.

[1] Questions based on posters and not on any survey, scientific or otherwise, of men watching “A” flicks.
[2] Or assuming you didn’t understand it even if you had watched it.

Excellent!(Mr.Burns style)
Now I’m curious as to what they’ll do with Quote#2 (Kaamathin Uchchi?).
btw, when you said skin-flick, I thought you were referring to the ‘Gwendoline’, ‘Centaur’s Night’ types (ref: 80s silver jubilee hits at Casino, Gaiety, Motcham etc.).

Hmm.. Didn’t know about this speciality genre of “skin flicks”. How are they different from “A padams”?

About Quote#2, the part that’ll really stump audiences will be “Approm, rottil pallam”. Gad, I almost want to watch this movie now :)

‘Basic Instinct’ was an ‘A’ padam that had skin AND a plot (alright, a semblance of a plot, and wtf was the ice pick doing under the bed?).
‘Gwendoline’ was an ‘A’ padam that had skin.

Wonder how Scirocco (the evergreen hit in Tamilnadu and not the Humphery Bogart version) will be in the dubbed version.

“generations of white women come on screen” - an interesting way of phrasing it. Of course, with Sharon Stone you get the benefit of all these generations being the same woman.

Personally, I think they’ll be disappointed. If the sequel is anything like the original then it’s almost certainly true that whatever vague explanation for all the action on screen that these men have made up in their own heads is going to be more logical and more creative than the actual plot.

Chenthil: Never heard of Scirocco. So no comments.

Falstaff: I believe the sequel is considerably worse than the original. And the men are going to be disappointed that these vernacular-spouting goris are not the goris of their dreams after all.

On an aside, I wonder what this will do to the local porn industry. Despite all the chopping (which the censor board must’ve surely done), I wonder if the average risque Hollywood movie is raunchier than those old Malayalam movies ever were.

[...] These days, when people talk about dubbing Basic Instinct into Tamil, all I can do is smile wanly. If I were you, folks, I would dub the Secret of Secrets. At the very least, it has a much better plot and the director’s name sounds more exotic. [...]
